What is this insect?

Does anyone know what this insect is?  They have just appeared in the last month, everywhere.  They don’t move too fast.  I’d appreciate knowing.  Thanks.

  1. I saw one of these about a month ago. It was ON my sister’s shoulder at the Grand Canyon. It gripped pretty hard and it was hard to get off of her. I would love to know what they really are. I was thinking it was some sort of huge “mountain” cricket? They are hefty and big! If you find out, please let me know!

  2. The insect in the photo is a Mormon cricket . You might see astounding numbers of them on a given year when the conditions are right. Something like every ten to twenty years they come in Biblical plague numbers to certain areas of Wyoming. They’ll make the highways slick with their smashed exoskeletons.

  3. Thanks CC. Ugh, hope I don’t run into them in Biblical numbers. Seeing lots on the trail is enough for me.
